James Alexander Malcolm MacKenzie Fraser, a Highland Scot from Lallybroch, nephew of Colum and Dougal MacKenzie. He marries Claire in 1743 and fathers Faith and Brianna, and secretly William Ransom. A Jacobite who survives Culloden, he later settles at Fraser's Ridge in North Carolina. In the finale he is shot at Kings Mountain and the ending leaves his fate open.
