Why a fixed family tree template falls short
Most printable family tree templates are blank charts with a set number of boxes: two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents. Real families rarely fit. A grandmother had nine children, a grandfather married twice, a cousin was adopted, and the boxes run out or sit empty.
Build a Family Tree works the other way round. You add people and relationships, and the canvas lays them out in generations automatically. Add a second marriage and the new partner appears beside the first; add five more children and the row widens. When it looks right, export exactly what is on screen.
You also keep the tree after you print it. Correct a date next year, add a new baby, and export a fresh copy in seconds instead of starting a template again.
How to make a printable family tree
- 01
Add your family.
Enter each person with a name and, if you know them, birth and death years. Link parents, partners and children as you go.
- 02
Pick what to show.
Show everyone, or choose a person and switch to their ancestors or descendants for a focused chart.
- 03
Export or print.
Download the canvas as a PNG image or a PDF, or print it straight from your browser.
Three kinds of family tree chart
Ancestor chart
One person at the bottom, with parents, grandparents and great-grandparents above. A classic gift for a child or a wedding.
Descendant chart
One couple at the top, with every child, grandchild and their partners below. Ideal for a family reunion or a big birthday.
Whole family tree
Everyone in the tree on one canvas, arranged by generation, including partners, half-siblings and step-families.
Export a family tree to PDF or PNG

PNG for sharing
A PNG image is easy to send in a family chat, add to a slideshow or post in an invitation. The export captures the whole tree, not only the part you have zoomed into, with a margin around the edges.
PDF for printing
The PDF holds the whole tree on one page, so you can print it at home on A4 or letter paper, or ask a print shop to make a poster for a reunion.
Print from the browser
For a quick copy, use the print button on the canvas and your browser’s own print dialog.
Tips for a family tree you will want to frame
Use partial dates. A birth year on its own is enough, and it reads better on a chart than a full date.
Add a photo to each ancestor. Faces make a printed tree something people stop to look at.
Ask relatives to check it first. Invite them to the tree so they can fix a spelling before it goes on the wall. If you already have research in another program, start from a GEDCOM import.
Family tree template questions
Is there a blank family tree template to download?
Instead of a fixed blank chart, you fill in a tree online and the layout adjusts to your family. Then export it as a PNG or PDF. It works for small families and for trees with many generations, which a fixed template cannot.
What size is the exported PDF?
The PDF is a single page sized to fit the whole tree, in landscape or portrait depending on its shape. When you print it, choose “fit to page” in your printer settings, or take the file to a print shop for a large poster.
Can I print only one side of the family?
Yes. Choose a person and switch to the ancestors view to show only their parents, grandparents and further back, or the descendants view to show their children, grandchildren and their partners. The export follows the view on screen.
Does the printable family tree include photos?
Yes. Each person’s card shows their profile photo when they have one, so the exported image includes the faces as well as the names and years.
Is it free to export and print?
Yes. Building, exporting and printing your family tree are all free, with no watermark and no paid plan.
